Mediatoolkit monitors millions of different websites, social media pages and sources, all at the same time, so the tool is using many different automatic methods to determine the location of the posts/articles/mentions, depending on the source type.

In the case of determining the locations of websites, the simplest method is to use exact domains, such as .at, .hu, .hr, where the system knows for sure that they are from Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and so on.

Social media pages usually have their location set up. If they don't, then we also look for "hints" inside the post:

  • For example, someone mentions "Wien" so we recognize it is Austria. If someone writes about "Ban Jelačić Square" we recognize it in Zagreb, Croatia.

If no such hints are available, the tool then looks at the language in which the mention is written.
